sustainable expo2015 fairtrade

Happy to share about the sustainable side of Expo 2015 once again. This time I want to tell you about FairTrade International & Italy.

I am still looking for the standards that make Expo2015 a more “sustainable” fair compared to others.. but I want to share good practices and organizations you can find inside, if you decide to visit expo 2015.

Fairtrade is a global organization with 28 members working to secure a better deal for farmers and workers. It is an alternative approach to conventional trade based on a partnership between producers and consumers.

The internationally-agreed Fairtrade Standards are developed through a collaborative process involving farmers and workers, traders and businesses, and other stakeholders. Producer organizations and traders are certified according to these Standards and when farmers can sell as Fairtrade, it can provide them with improved terms of trade. This allows them the opportunity to plan for their future and improve quality of life according to their priorities. For consumers, Fairtrade offers a powerful way to reduce poverty through everyday shopping with a wide choice of products that carry the FAIRTRADE trade marks.

Currently there are more than 1.5 million small-scale farmers and workers in Fairtrade certified producer organizations in 74 countries across Latin America & the Caribbean, Africa & the Middle East, Asia & the Pacific. Fairtrade certified products are sold in 125 countries, and the sales of Fairtrade certified products in 2013 reached €5.5 billion.

Asking the Italian director Paolo Pastore why they are participating in Expo Milano 2015 he said
Fairtrade is an international organization that operates in 78 developing countries and involves 1.5 million farmers who work the land while respecting the environment and biodiversity. These same workers, thanks to our standards, have been able to take control of their lives. In parallel, their products can be purchased on “fair” terms and sold in our markets. Through Expo Milano 2015, we want to show everyone from all around the world, that there is another way to choose what to buy and to be respectful of the producers and their work.
